Introduction

Intended Audience

This tutorial is intended for anyone interested in installing Cache on Linux on their computers. This tutorial was created running VmWare on Windows 2000. Another tutorial will cover setting up VmWare prior to the Linux Installation for those not wishing to repartition their hard drives to install Linux.

These instructions are for installing Red Hat Linux 9, although they could be used to install Red Hat Enterprise Server or Fedora Core as well (with a few minor variations).

Linux may be installed as an alternate operating system on a dual-boot configuation, on a virtual machine using commercially available "Virtual Machine" applications, or as the only operating system. Since InterSystems partners may use a variety of platoforms, my laptop is normally configured for dual-boot.

For this turorial, I have chosen to install on a virtual machine for several reasons, the main reason being, it is a lot easier to do screen captures. The steps shown here may deviate slightly for a dual-boot configuration, but I believe that the differences are in the noise, and if these steps are followed, you will have an up and running Linux environment. I will try to call attention to areas where running multiple operating system on a single hardware platform might make a difference.
